Waste Management

The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA)  has been illegally dumping millions upon millions of gallons of raw sewage into our coastal waters, on and off, for the past 27 years. In the Federal District Court’s Consent Order of 1990, Paragraph 17 states “DPNR records document an extensive chronology of unpermitted discharges of untreated sewage into the waters on all three islands.” Now, 21 years later, Waste Management is still dumping raw sewage.  Last year, according to their own testimony, VIWMA dumped 74+ million gallons of raw sewage onto Long Reef, St Croix alone.

Last year, the quantity of raw sewage was 1.2 million gallons pumped out per day into our coastal waters and the Caribbean Sea. In 2011, on January 18, the dumping recommenced at Figtree, St. Croix, and was still continuing weeks later on February 5, 2011, according to the Department of Planning and Natural Resources.  On February 25th, they  also started dumping raw sewage by Hovensa beach, and that dumping of raw sewage continues today, in March, 2011.

Attached are letters to the EPA, asking the federal agency to stop this illegal dumping NOW, before we have totally polluted waters surrounding us. This is killing our economy, which is based on Tourism, in addition to killing our endangered species who live in those waters.

Would you be supportive of our bringing a Citizen’s Suit, to ask the Federal District Court to order the EPA and NOAA to work together to create and execute a comprehensive plan to stop the dumping, and save our coastal waters? Please tell us what you think.
